I don't wanna crack open these Smelling Salts unless I'm in a mental world. And I really wanna get out. They smell pretty bad.

–Raz when using the Smelling Salts in the real world

Horrible smelling device used to enable the user to leave someone’s mind.

Old Psychopedia description

Smelling Salts is an item in Psychonauts and Psychonauts 2. It is a small golden container which, when cracked open, emits a smell so horrid it sends Razputin's astral projection straight back into the real world. Many psychics carry around smelling salts in case they need to exit mental worlds.

Gameplay[]

The Smelling Salts are given to Raz by Maloof Canola immediately before Basic Braining, who says he no longer needs them as he intends to have his parents come pick him up from camp. From then on Raz is able to use the Smelling Salts in order to eject himself from a mental world back into the real world.

Trivia[]

  • In Psychonauts, using the Smelling Salts after crossing the point of no return simply sends Razputin back to the Collective Unconscious, as his brain remains outside of his body.
    • Using the Smelling Salts during a Ford tutorial will result in Raz saying "No, I think I'll stay in this mind for a while longer".
  • In Psychonauts 2, if Raz tries to use the Smelling Salts in Lucrecia's Lament, Ford will stop him from leaving the world.
    • If Raz uses the Salts in Fatherland Follies, Lili will scream for him. When he comes back, Raz will tell Lili he had to go for some supplies.
  • A glitch occurs when Raz uses the Smelling Salts while being tied up in Fatherland Follies. The animation of him using them will play, but he will be in his tied up position, completely motionless.
  • The Smelling Salts make a cameo in Broken Age, another game by Double Fine.
  • The smelling salts in Psychonauts 2 are closed using magnets instead of rope.
