Milla's Dance Party

Come on in, darling! Don’t be shy! Welcome to my mind! Here, it’s a party every day, baby! I can teach you to use your thoughts to float away and to keep on bouncing! If you want to stop in for a lesson on levitation or if you just want to dance, remember, you are always welcome! But please, do stay out of certain areas. Some memories could crash my party and nobody wants to stop having fun, do they?

–Milla Vodello

Milla's Dance Party is a level in Psychonauts. It takes place inside of Milla Vodello's mental world, and serves as a training course for the campers at Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp to learn the Levitation PSI-Power.

Description[]

As its name might suggest, Milla's mental world is one enormous party from start to finish, set inside of a dance club with a 1970s disco aesthetic. Numerous Party Dancers are seen throughout the level dancing to their hearts' content. In some areas, they're joined by the campers, who are all dancing on their Levitation balls.

Since the Dance Party is also meant to function as a Levitation training course, it is equipped with all sorts of obstacles to train campers at getting around using this power, in a playful manner. Milla also has the ability to place pinball-style ball returns to allow the campers to more easily get back up in certain areas, in case they fall too far down. The centerpiece of the course is a racetrack where campers can compete to see who is the fastest.

While Milla's mental world has an all-round very upbeat vibe, she isn't as carefree as she might seem. One hidden room off to the side of the course's normal route contains the scars of a terrible trauma Milla can never forget: when she was younger, Milla worked in an orphanage until it caught fire while she was away, resulting in the deaths of all of the children in her care. Milla will try her best to steer Raz away from the room containing memories related to this incident. This room has some children's toys and a large toy chest in the corner, which when punched open and entered leads to a room lined with bars. On the other side, a group of Nightmares are kept locked away in a horrible, burning landscape, while they whisper in the children's voices about being in pain and plead for Milla to rescue them.

Points of Interest[]

  • Dance Lounge: Located immediately past the statue of the bouncer that contains the club's entrance, the dance lounge is a very high vertical room that contains various obstacles as well as floating platforms with sofas and pillows, where Party Dancers and campers can be seen dancing together.
  • Elemental Room: Another large vertical room reached by passing through a tunnel at the top of the Dance Lounge. A key feature of this room is an installation that features parts of the floor that are wet, electrified, burning, and covered in radioactive material, as well as spikes, to demonstrate what the levitation ball can and can't pass through safely. Though it should normally be traversable, Razputin cannot pass through the wet portion on his Levitation ball due to his issues with water.
  • Race Track: Past the elemental room, a door leads to a checkered corridor that gives way to the Levitation race track, an enormous course with several branching routes and accelerators where campers can race each other.
  • Fan Room: Upon reaching the end of the Race Track, Raz is transported to the fan room, where bubble vents and a huge fan blow him ever upwards. At the top is a corridor that leads to the end of the party, where the inner Milla is usually found dancing with more Party Dancers.

In Psychonauts[]

As part of Sasha's experiment that leads Raz to explore a strange and unfamiliar part of his own mind, he must climb a mysterious tower made of thorns. When he finds himself unable to climb any higher, Sasha suggests that Raz get Levitation training from Milla to proceed. Raz makes his way to the beach area of the camp, where after he obtains an Oarsman's badge from Ranger Cruller, he is able to join Milla's class on one of the floating docks on the lake. Milla is initially unsure about training Raz, who does not have parental permission to be at Whispering Rock, but is swayed by his charming banter and Sasha's trust in the boy.

Inside Milla's mind, Raz is greeted by a floating television screen with a dancing Milla, who gives him a temporary Levitation learner's permit and tells him to come find her at the other end of the party. Raz sets off to scale the club, jumping and floating his way through all sorts of obstacles. Partway through, Raz must participate in and win a race against Bobby, Clem, and Crystal. When he reaches Milla at the final room and goes to talk to her, Razputin is awarded his Levitation merit badge without much further ado.

If Raz returns to the Dance Party before Milla is kidnapped, he once again encounters inner Milla on the television screen, who is surprised to see him back, but welcomes him to party as much as he likes. If he does so after her kidnapping, the Milla on the screen sounds confused and explains that she saw a thing on the docks before everything went black. She encourages Raz to "give her body a shake" should he find it, and tells her he's still welcome to hang around at the party.

Collectibles[]

Figments[]

Milla's Dance Party contains 233 figments, most of which are shaped like things and people one might find at a club, or abstractly fit Milla's 70s party aesthetic.

Figments of Interest[]

Among Milla's figments, some that stand out include:

  • Several figments shaped like small children found in Milla's secret room.

Cobwebs[]

The Lounge - 3 Cobwebs[]

  1. Use levitation to cross the large gap. Jump into the next gap in front of you and turn to the right. The cobweb is at the lower right corner.
  2. When you reach the large pinball room, turn around from the start. The web is posted against the wall.
  3. Stuck on the outer wall at the top of the pinball room.

The Party - 2 Cobwebs[]

  1. Directly under the grating at the start.
  2. In the last room, where there are numerous platforms around the outer edge with everybody dancing on them, jump down to the bottom of the room. This web is on the wall under the entrance platform.

Memory Vaults[]

  • Milla's Children - in Milla's secret room, attainable by floating to the right from the fan that blows you to the ladder halfway up the Dance Lounge.
  • Milla's Adventures! - at the very bottom of the Elemental Room, right after exiting the Dance Lounge.

Enemies[]

Trivia[]

  • If Raz is left idle in this level, he will tap his leg to the beat of the music and then start dancing.
  • Milla's Censors all wear festive purple top hats to match the party aesthetic.
  • Milla's Dance Party and Waterloo World are the only mental worlds without any FMV cutscenes.
  • This area is one of three levels in Psychonauts where collecting figments is quite a bit more difficult than usual—in this case, this is due to the level's bright palette, which tends to make the equally brightly-colored figments difficult to detect. This is particularly frustrating in the racetrack section, as the track is very long, with many figments on numerous paths, requiring you to complete the race several times or slowly backtrack on foot if you wish to collect all the figments.
    • The other two levels are Black Velvetopia, due once more to its art style and color palette, making figments blend in to the environment, and Waterloo World, due to the fact that many figments are placed in areas that are either out of the way or reachable only with perfectly accurate levitation.
  • Oddly enough, the mechanic that allows Raz to pass over dangerous surfaces (minus deep water) safely using Levitation, as shown by the Elemental Room in this level, is utilized only one more time, near the end of the game. This may be because of the rushed production time Double Fine faced near the end of the game. The mechanic returns in Psychonauts 2, though it doesn't see too much use there, either.
  • Milla's Dance Party is the only mental level other than Basic Braining that has other campers in it. Unlike Basic Braining, Milla never kicks anyone out of her mind.
  • The music track that plays all throughout this world is not included in the official release of the Psychonauts soundtrack.
