Jasper Rolls

Your fighting is weak, uninspired, and flat as a pancake.

–Jasper to Raz

Everyone has an internal critic. The problem with Gloria’s is that he’s just too big. Also, he kills actors from time to time.

Old Psychopedia description

Jasper Rolls is Gloria Von Gouton's inner critic, and the boss of Gloria's Theater in Psychonauts.

Appearance[]

Jasper is a large, loud, and overweight theater critic. He wears a formal black suit. He has orange hair and eyebrows, a pink nose and pink ears, crooked yellow teeth, purple skin, four fingers on each hand, and brown eyes. He does not have a neck - his head is detached from his body and can float freely above it. He likes to roll his r's when he talks. He shrinks down to the size of a mouse after Raz helps Gloria overcome her mood swings.

Story[]

Psychonauts[]

Jasper had always existed as a critic in Gloria's Theater, but he wasn't always so big and loud. After Gloria had gotten word that her mother committed suicide, she was deeply affected to the point where she couldn't act properly. The berating of the critics outside of Gloria's mind caused Jasper to grow big enough to be heard by all.

Jasper, in the form of his alter-ego the Phantom, tries to ruin the play by attempting to kill the main actress, Bonita Soleil. Once Raz exposes him for the fraud he is, Jasper becomes enraged and begins the fight. Jasper reveals his secret weapon: a flying theater seat machine equipped with fountain pens as guns.

Once defeated, he begins shrinking down to almost nothingness. He continues berating the play, but his voice becomes far too small to have any effect on Gloria's mind, freeing her from the constant verbal criticism.

Psychonauts 2[]

Jasper Rolls makes a brief appearance in the Psychonauts recap animation in Psychonauts 2.

Strategy[]

Let's float up to the catwalks and blind him with those spotlights so he'll let down his guard. Zig zag on the way up to avoid the fat man's attacks

Ford Cruller advicing Raz from the bacon about Jasper.

Jasper attempts to attack Raz by shooting ink blots at him. Raz must use three candles in order to defeat Jasper. There are three candles in a box on the side of the stage. After gathering those, use Levitation on the music flying upwards from the orchestra pit. There are 3 spotlights on the catwalk that can be used to stun Jasper. Put a candle in and then light it with Pyrokinesis. Jasper falls and instructs actors to assault Raz before he gets hurt. After damaging Jasper enough, he destroys the lit spotlight and attacks again. Every time a candle is lit, more actors appear and attempt to stop Raz. Once he is defeated peace returns to the theater and Gloria's mood swing is cured.

Attacks and Health[]

  • Fountain Pen Cannons: Jasper will constantly fire ink blots towards Raz and unlike most other bosses attacks, this one will be fire towards the direction Raz is running or directing. Recommendation is moving in zig zag or change from direction to avoid getting hit. Opposite case will result in Raz receiving 4 hit points (1 whole brain for Mental Health).
  • Levitation: through out the battle and the introduction to the boss fight, Jasper's theater balcony/seat seems to be capable of floating and unless Jasper gets stunned the balcony can float indefinitely. Jasper can use this balcony to follow raz or move backwards in case Raz is trying to approach him, it is also noticeable that the balcony can float very high since it can still reach the catwalks area without any trouble.
  • Reinforced Balcony: Similar to the levitation, more than an attack this is a characteristic the balcony has. If Raz attempts to PSI-Blast or perform any other PSI-Power on it, it will reflect or simply be immune to the attack used. The only way to make the balcony vulnerable to attacks is if Jasper gets stunned by any of the spotlights.
  • Stage Actor (Thistle): after stunning Jasper, a set of actors will appear, one of which are the thistles. They will use a deadly spin attack towards Raz in which he cannot PSI-blast or PSI-punch them, however he can set them on fire with pyrokinesis or even making the thistles spin over the fire breath of a hound (Once they became dizzy of spinning you can actually hit them easily). Their spins does 2 hit points, probably one of the actors with weakest damage.
  • Stage Actor (Hound): after stunning Jasper, a set of actors will appear, the hounds are probably the most common but also dangerous ones. They will chase Raz very quickly and when they reach him the hounds will attempt to do a breath of fire. Raz can either Shield or simply move out of the way to dodge this attack. Otherwise this will result on 6 hit points (1 and a half brain). To attack this enemy Raz can use PSI-punch or PSI-blast
  • Stage Actor (Bat): like past stage actors these one's will appear after stunning Jasper, however unlike the hounds and thistles this ones will appear both on the center of the catwalks and beneath them, which gives a total of 6 bats around the theater. Bats are noticeable for having a range and close attack which are focused on performing shrieking soundwaves. In distance Raz only receives 2 hit points, however if he gets close to the bats they will deal 4 hit points. The best way to take care of this enemies is by using PSI-blast and with the chain blast or super chain blast upgrade its way more easy to take these down.

The stage actors themselves in terms of health their maximum of health is 3 hits: the thistles only resist 1 hit with PSI-blast, PSI-punch, Pyrokinesis and another thistle under the confusion grenade effects, however if they are set on fire by a hound it will take them 3 hits to be killed. The hounds with PSI-punch and a thistle under the confusion grenade effect will take 3 punches or spins to defeat it, however with PSI-blast it will only require 2 shoots. Lastly the bats takes 1 shoot for PSI-blast and if Pyrokinesis is used on them they will resist at least 3 hits.

Jasper itself on the other hand, similar Blueprint Brain tank he is from the bosses of Psychonauts that has a bigger quantity health. To be able to attack Jasper raz must use pyrokinesis on 3 spotlights to stun and blind him, once Jasper is vulnerable to attacks Raz can deal a total of 7 hits (6 on the last stun), both PSI-punch and PSI-Blast deal the same damage equally so in total the boss requires a total of 23 hits to be defeated.

Trivia[]

  • If one looks at Jasper when he moves his head, it can be seen that he doesn't have a neck.
  • His surname, Rolls, might be a reference to his weight.
  • When using Clairvoyance on Jasper, he sees Raz as one and a half stars, since he is a critic. When using Clairvoyance on the Phantom, Raz is also seen as one and a half stars, hinting at the Phantom's true identity.
  • During the battle with Jasper, whenever one of his ink attacks hits, a critical word appears in the spot the ink hit (such as "Vulgar!", "Crude!", "Witless!" and "Awkward!"). These words were all taken by a visual effect artist for the game, name Dion Hopkins, from a real review of the 2004 film White Chicks.[1]
  • In the semifinal slide of "Gloria's Fallen Star", a man resembling Jasper appears on the top right seat. This could suggest Jasper might be a person that exists outside Gloria's mind, or at least based on them.
  • It's strange that he is the one behind the disguise of the Phantom as the Phantom is slim, whereas Jasper is obese. A concept art reveals that Jasper uses what appears to be a corset to appear slimmer when he disguises as the Phantom.
  • His character takes loose inspiration from The Muppets characters Statler and Waldorf as both he and this pair is heckling critics who mock the show they are watching while on a balcony. The major difference is that Jasper's insults are more demeaning and unintentionally silly, whereas Statler and Waldorf's insults are intentionally funny and less snarky and insulting.
  • It is impossible to confuse Jasper using Confusion grenades. However, audio exists in the files of confusion dialogue in which he praises a play, so it is possible it wasn't programmed in.
